Towanroath Engine House, St Agnes.

The Towanroath pumping engine house lies on the North Cornwall coast just west of St. Agnes. It was constructed in 1872 and is a Grade II listed building in the stewardship of the National Trust. It pumped water from the 600 feet deep Towanroath Shaft of the Wheal Coates Copper and Tin Mine. The grilled shaft still visible just to the east of the engine house with the main workings lying just below the low water mark.

Yorkstone is a term for a variety of sandstone, specifically from quarries in Yorkshire that have been worked since medieval times, but now applied generally. Yorkstone is a tight grained, Carboniferous sedimentary rock. The stone consists of quartz, mica, feldspar, clay and iron oxides.

At an Extraordinary meeting of Exeter City Council held on Tuesday 12th October 2010, a resolution was passed that extended the Freedom of the City to the Coldstream Guards due to the historic links that they have had with the City.

Arrangements have now been made for a ceremony to be held on Wednesday 6th July 2011 for the formal presentation of the Freedom Scroll and for the Coldstream Guards to exercise their rights to parade through the City streets with "drums beating, bayonets fixed and colours flying."

As a young photographer using black and white film and processing at home, I gradually became aware that different films and papers although all black and white did produce warm or cool prints. Now Lightroom allows instant control of various factors. Which is the best is up to you, the viewer.

Carols down the line 2009

On Tuesday 08 December 2009; Wednesday 09 December 2009 and Thursday 10 December 2009 the South Devon Railway (Heritage Railway of the Year 2007) will be hosting their 14th successive year of “CAROLS DOWN THE LINE” - Coordinated by Paignton (Palace Avenue) Methodist Church.

This is an evening of steam and carol nostalgia.

Trains will depart from Buckfastleigh Station at 7.30pm The majority of the proceeds will be donated to ‘Action for Children’ and a ‘Third World’ Project. A collection will be made on each train for Shelter Box (Disaster Relief) and The Railway Mission.

The evening’s coach was to be my SUL 1202 which was prepped during the afternoon. Whilst this was going on there was an opportunity to photograph her with the recently arrived 420. David Sheppard's SUL will be a permanent stable mate.

Motive power for the train was 0-6-0 PT 5786 details of which can be found here

Ready to depart from Buckfastleigh.

Nearly home and time to refuel before the SUL retired for the night.

Welcombe Mouth sees the Strawberry Water stream cascade on to the beach. Here it follows the exposed ribs of harder sandstone. That is where I tried to photograph the surface of the stream placing the lens half in the water and half out.

To my mind works of art ! Sandymouth Bay area.

"The superb carboniferous sandstone cliffs that surround Bude (and stretch down as far as Crackington Haven) were formed during the carboniferous era, around 300 million years ago. The stratification of shale and sandstone, vividly contorted, are unique in southern Britain. During what is known as the variscan orogeny (which affected the entire Cornish coast), the cliffs were literally pushed up from underneath the sea, creating the overlapping strata. The cliffs around Bude are the only ones in Cornwall that are made of carboniferous sandstone (most of the Cornish coast is made from Devonian slate, granite and Precambrianmetamorphic rocks). The stratified cliffs of Bude give their name to a geological event called the Bude formation."
